Riggans to Rehab With Biscuits

MONTGOMERY, AL - Tampa Bay Rays catcher Shawn Riggans will begin a Major League rehabilitation assignment with the Biscuits as they open a five-game series with the Birmingham Barons (Chicago White Sox) on Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium. Riggans, who is currently on the 15-day disabled list with tendonitis in his right shoulder, is expected to spend the entire homestand with the Biscuits.

Riggans, who made his Major League debut with the then Devil Rays in 2006, has compiled a career Major League batting average of .208 in 58 big league games. He spent the entire 2008 season with the Rays, appearing in 44 games and hitting six home runs while driving in 24 runs.

A member of the Biscuits in both 2004 and 2005, Riggans spent the entire 2005 season in Montgomery. He batted .310 in 89 games for the Biscuits in 2005, belting eight home runs with 53 RBIs. He is fourth all-time in Biscuits career batting average, posting a combined average of .301. He was named as Southern League Hitter of the Week for the week of August 22-28, 2005.

Originally drafted by the Rays in the 24th round of the 2000 June draft out of Florida International University, the 28-year old is currently in his ninth professional season.
