Lugnuts prevail, 'Caps win streak snapped

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Lansing Lugnuts (4-13) scored four times in the second inning Tuesday night en- route to a 5-2 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps (13-4) at Fifth Third Ballpark. The Whitecaps' 5 game win streak is over, and the Fort Wayne Tincaps take over first place in the Midwest League East.

Having played great baseball of late, the Whitecaps struggled with men on base all night long. West Michigan stranded 10 base runners, and the ‘Caps were 1-10 with men in scoring position. The one hit was when Bryan Pounds ripped a two-out double to left in the first inning to score Brandon Douglas.

But the second inning belonged to the Lugnuts. Yoherman Chavez and Mark Sobolewski each singled to begin the inning. Then, Lugnuts' first baseman, Mark McDade, crushed a ball to left center field for a three-run homer. Lansing would tack on one more run four hitters later as Kenny Wilson singled past a drawn-in infield for a 4-1.

The Lugnuts would make it a 5-1 game in the sixth. Mike McDade, who was hit a by a pitch, came home on a single by Balbino Fuenmayor.

West Michigan's scored in the eighth when Luis Palacios came home on an RBI ground-out from Bryan Pounds.

Lansing starter John Anderson was very effective, going 4 innings, scattering 7 hits and walking just 1 batter. Frank Gailey picked up the win in relief, and Matt Daly got the save.

‘Caps starter Mauricio Robles (2-1) took the loss. He gave up 8 hits in 4.2 innings, walking 1 and striking out five.

Luis Salas went 3-4 for the ‘Caps. Brandon Douglas tallied 2 hits in 5 at-bats.

Wednesday night marks the start of a 6 -game road trip for West Michigan. The Whitecaps begin a three-game series in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday night at 7:35 p.m. Right hander Brandon Hamilton is projected to start for the ‘Caps.
