Legends, LFUCG announce 'Green' partnership

The Lexington Legends and the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) today announced a partnership in a recycling and education project that will increase recycling efforts and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
Legends President and CEO Alan Stein and Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry made the announcement today (April 24) at a news conference in the Maker's Mark Club at Applebee's Park.
Both the city and the Legends have joined the WasteBuster program to promote environmentally friendly ideas and practices in their operations.
LFUCG's Division of Waste Management and Bluegrass PRIDE (Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment) have worked with the Legends on their involvement in the program.
"The Legends feel it is incredibly important to be proactively involved in environmental issues," Stein said. "Our partnership with Lexington's Department of Environmental Quality has allowed us to access how we can limit our waste materials and successfully recycle our waste materials. Part of our partnership is to educate our fans at Applebee's Park on how they can be more environmentally sound in everyday life. We are very proud of our partnership and are looking forward to a long relationship with the Department of Environmental Quality."
"The Lexington Legends and Alan Stein are community leaders and we are pleased they have made a formal commitment to reduce solid waste and help us protect our environment," Newberry said.
April 25 will be "Green Night" at Applebee's Park as the Legends take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Educational materials will be available at Applebee's Park and fans will receive information during the game about how they can recycle, improve water quality and conserve energy at home and at work. The LFUCG Department of Environmental Quality is also sponsoring a Gym Bag giveaway to the first 1,000 fans through the gates Saturday night.
The city has provided bins for recycling at the ballpark. Bluegrass PRIDE has provided information on which materials can be recycled. The Legends' "Green Team" circulates through the stands to collect recyclable materials, and the Legends have installed hand dryers in restrooms to reduce paper towel waste.
