Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - Law enforcement displays and events, a celebrity softball game, a book signing by a former Husker and NFL football player, a silent auction of special game-worn Royals jerseys, plus the final fireworks show of the season are all on tap this Saturday, August 23rd at Rosenblatt. Not to mention the Royals taking on the Memphis Redbirds, as the top farm clubs of the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals square off.
Saturday is Public Service Appreciation Day, presented by the U.S. Army and Woodmen of the World. It begins at 4:00 p.m. in the Rosenblatt Stadium parking lot. The Omaha Fire Department will conduct a live rescue demonstration using the jaws-of-life and will have several fire trucks outside the ballpark, including a ladder truck displaying a large American flag.
Several area police departments will also have vehicles on display. The Omaha Police Department will be on hand with cruisers, police dogs, horses, a helicopter and a drunk-driving course. Nebraska State Patrol troopers will conduct a safety seat belt expo.
Stadium gates also open at 4:00 p.m., with the Todd ân Tyler Radio Empire Celebrity Softball Game slated for 5:00 p.m. Besides Z-92's morning team of Todd ân Tyler, Craig Evans and Travis Justice, other celebrities set to play in the game include former Huskers Eric Crouch, Jason Peter and Rob Zatechka, Congressman Lee Terry, actor John Beasley, and UFC fighter Houston Alexander. Royals manager Mike Jirschele and pitching coach Tom Burgmeier, along with Creighton University baseball coach Ed Servais, will also take part.
Peter will also be signing copies of his New York Times Best-Seller, Hero of the Underground: My Journey Down To Heroin & Back. Peter's memoir chronicles his addiction to heroin and cocaine, along with pain relievers and alcohol. "Hero of the Underground gives us a portrait of a red-blooded jock as monster dope fiend," said Jerry Stahl, author of Permanent Midnight. "It's a savage, unsparing, eye-popping ride through the dark soul of big money, endless drugs, American manhood and our national past time - self-destruction. Ex-Cornhusker Jason Peter writes like a soulful badass, and we're lucky he lived to tell the tale."
The Royals take on the Memphis Redbirds in a 7:05 p.m. game Saturday. During the contest, Royals players will wear American-themed jerseys. A silent auction of those autographed jerseys will take place during the game to raise money for Walter Reed Operation Helping Hands.
The evening, which will be capped by the final Werner Enterprises fireworks show of the season, is also presented by Z-92, WOWT and The Reader.
