Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Colorado Springs bit off more than it could chew during Wednesday night's Bark in the Park promotion at Security Service Field. With 119 dogs in attendance, the Sky Sox put themselves in an 8-0 hole before falling to Las Vegas 8-5, in front of 2,131 fans.

Blake DeWitt and Rene Rivera provided all the damage for the 51s. The duo combined for six hits, four home runs, and eight RBI, all against Sky Sox starting pitcher Sean Smith.

DeWitt's two-out solo shot in the first inning gave the 51s an early lead that they would not relinquish. He added a two-run double in the third inning before cashing in on his second solo home run in the fifth inning.

Rivera's three-run blast in the fourth inning gave Las Vegas a 6-0 edge. He added a bases-empty home run in the sixth inning.

Smith (5-5) lasted six innings and struck out seven batters. He allowed just three hits to the other players in the Las Vegas lineup.

Heath Totten (6-5) was unscathed through seven innings, but ran into trouble to begin the eighth inning. The Sky Sox ultimately chased him from the game with three straight hits to leadoff the inning, including a run-scoring single from Mike McCoy that put the Sky Sox on the board. Totten was lifted after a walk to Kenny Perez loaded the bases.

Brandon Tuten relieved the starting pitcher and was greeted with back-to-back doubles from Cory Sullivan and Matt Miller that cut the 51s lead in half. Three of the runs were charged to Totten who finished the night allowing four runs. Tuten retired the next three batters.

The Sky Sox loaded the bases with two-outs in the ninth inning, but Miller's groundout to second base sealed the deal for Las Vegas.

The same two teams play again Thursday with another 6:05 MDT start time. Franklin Morales (8-4, 5.70) will try to even up the series for the Sky Sox opposite Eric Cyr (2-1, 7.71).
