Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Salt Lake City, UT - Brad Coon hit two home runs and drove in three as the Salt Lake Bees beat the Sidewinders 8-2 on Wednesday night at Franklin Covey Field.

Coon led off the bottom of the first with a home run off Billy Buckner. After doubling against Buckner in the third, Coon greeted A.J. Shappi with a two run home run in the bottom of the fifth. He finished the game 3 for 4.

Buckner started and went the first four innings for Tucson. He allowed three runs on four hits and walked two with three strikeouts.

The top of the Salt Lake order did the majority of the damage against the Sidewinders pitching staff. Coon, Bobby Wilson, Dee Brown and Brandon Wood drove in all eight of Salt Lake's runs and combined to score seven times. The foursome also totaled nine hits.

Brown and Wood hit back to back home runs off Shappi in the seventh.

The Sidewinders were held in check by Anthony Ortega through five innings before putting together a two out rally in the sixth. Jamie D'Antona singled and Jesus Merchan launched a two run home run to left for the Sidewinders only runs of the game. Back to back singles by Donnie Kelly and Phil Avlas and a walk to Frank Curreri loaded the bases but Tim Raines, Jr. bounced to short to end the inning.

Ortega (3-0) allowed nine hits in six innings but just the two runs. He struck out five and walked one.

Trent Oeltjen went 0 for 5 to end his hitting streak at 10.

The Sidewinders and Bees play game two of their series on Thursday night at Franklin Covey Field. Right-hander Max Scherzer (1-0, 2.45) starts for Tucson against right-hander Giancarlo Alvarado (7-4, 4.19) for Salt Lake. First pitch is at 6:05 Tucson time.
