Rock Cats escape for victory

New Britain, CT - Brock Peterson's RBI double in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the game-winner as the Rock Cats escaped with a 4-3 victory over Portland.

Dustin Martin led off the eighth with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Matt Moses. That set the stage for Peterson's double to left field that scored Martin for the go-ahead run. Things got shaky in the top of the ninth for closer Ben Julianel. He retired the first two batters he faced. Jeff Corsaletti then hit an infield single to shortstop Toby Gardenhire, who fielded the ball and misfired to first. The play was ruled a hit and kept the inning alive. Aaron Bates then reached base on a walk before Julianel forced Zachary Daeges to line out to center field. Julianel held on to notch his 19th save of the season.

David Winfree put the Rock Cats on the board, 2-0 in the fourth inning with a two-run triple. Danny Valencia and Erik Lis delivered back-to-back singles with two outs before Winfree knocked them in with a three-base hit to right field.

The Sea Dogs stormed back in the sixth. With two outs, Sandy Madera reached base on a single. John Otness doubled to knock in Madera to cut the lead, 2-1. Jorge Jimenez followed with a triple that tied the game. Iggy Suarez added an RBI single that scored Jimenez and gave the Sea Dogs the lead, 3-2.

The Rock Cats struck back in the bottom of the seventh. Lis led off with a double. Toby Gardenhire's two-out single to left field knocked in Lis to tie the game, 3-3.

Anthony Swarzak turned in his finest performance in quite some time with 5 2/3 solid innings., but came away with the no-decision. Swarzak allowed three runs on eight hits. Ryan Mullins fired two scoreless innings in relief for the Rock Cats. Armando Gabino (4-4, 3.16) picked up the win despite pitching to just one batter who he struck out.

Kris Johnson limited the Rock Cats to three runs on seven hits. He struck out eight while walking none. Michael James (2-3, 4.33) suffered the loss in relief.
