Rock Cats defeated at hands of Defenders

New Britain, CT - Joseph Martinez struck out 10 batters in six innings as the Defenders downed the Rock Cats, 5-3 at New Britain Stadium.

Martinez (6-6, 2.36) limited the Rock Cats to two runs on four hits while walking none. Justin Hedrick notched his third save with 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.

The Defenders took an early lead in the second inning. Olmo Rosario's sacrifice fly to center field drove in Carlos Sosa from third base for the first run of the game. Ben Copeland added an RBI single for a 2-0 advantage.

In the sixth, the Defenders struck for two more runs. Kyle Haines' double to right field knocked in Rosario, who reached on a throwing error and stole third base. Copeland delivered another RBI single to put the Defenders ahead, 4-0.

The Rock Cats battled back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Dustin Martin and a sacrifice fly by Danny Valencia that scored Brock Peterson from third and cut the score in half, 4-2. Peterson added an RBI single in the eighth inning.

Zach Ward suffered the loss. Ward (2-5, 3.45) tossed five solid innings with two runs on seven hits, but walked four. He struck out five.
