Romo Heads to San Francisco

June 24, 2008 - Eastern League (EL) Connecticut Defenders

NORWICH, CT- For the first time in the 2008 season, a Connecticut Defender has been promoted directly to the San Francisco Giants. Sergio Romo received the news today that he would join the big league club in Cleveland as the Giants and Indians will reprise the 1954 World Series.

Romo, 25, a right-handed reliever for the Defenders was having great success as Connecticut's closer. Romo's 11 saves in 12 chances was good for fifth in the Eastern League. In addition, he posted a 1-3 record with a 4.00 ERA in 24 games.

Romo began the 2008 season with ten consecutive scoreless innings and saved eight games in a row. Shortly thereafter, Romo suffered a minor injury to his right leg that sidelined him for 11 days.

Sergio has seen regular work on the hill since coming off the DL and apparently San Francisco has been paying close attention.

Right-handed reliever Vinnie Chulk was designated for assignment to make room for Romo on the 40-man roster.

The Defenders continue a 4 game series vs. Portland tonight at Dodd Stadium at 6:35pm. For more information call the Defenders at (860)-887-7962
