Peoria Chiefs News Release
Clinton, IA - The Peoria Chiefs dropped a bizarre encounter to the Clinton LumbeKings 7-3 Thursday to start a four-game weekend series. The loss drops Peoria to 12-21 on the season and 3-4 on their 10-game road trip. With the game scoreless in the second inning, the LumberKings got on the board against Alberto Cabrera. Ian Gac, who leads the MWL in most offensive categories, led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, Jonathan Greene put the home team on the board with a two-run home run to right field. Two innings later, Clinton broke the game open and knocked Cabrera out of the contest. Greene drew a leadoff walk before singles from Felix Jose and Cristian Santana loaded the bases. After an out at the plate and a popup, Renny Osuna singled home two for a 4-0 Clinton advantage. Tim Smith doubled home two more and the LumberKings had a 6-0 lead. Jordan Latham relieved Cabrera and struck out Gac to end the inning. The LumberKings added an unearned run off Latham in the sixth for a 7-0 lead.
Between innings an on-field incident caused both benches and dugouts to empty. The result was a lot of jawing by both teams and only one clear ejection, that of LumberKings designated hitter Tim Smith. The two managers continued yelling at each other and Chiefs hitting coach Desi Wilson took over third base coaching duties in the seventh though it was unclear if Ryne Sandberg was ejected. The Chiefs rallied in the ninth but it was too little, too late. With two down Marquez Smith powered a home run well over the left field wall. Jovan Rosa followed with a double and came around to score on an error by Green that also moved Jose Made to second. Elvis Lara cut the lead to 7-3 with a single to center, but Fabio Castillo finished the game with a strikeout of Cliff Andersen Player of the Game - Marquez Smith (3B) - Smith homered in the ninth, his third of the season to finish the game 2-for-4 with a RBI.
