Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs sat through a 2 hour and 38 minute rain delay before rallying from a 3-1 deficit in the ninth inning for a 4-3 win over the visiting Fort Wayne Wizards on Friday night at O'Brien Field. The loss snaps a four-game losing streak for the Chiefs and improves them to 8-13 overall on the season.

Trailing 3-1 in the ninth inning, the Chiefs rallied against the Wizards bullpen. Cliff Andersen started the inning with a base hit up the middle and Marwin Gonzalez reached on an error by shortstop Drew Cumberland. Leon Johnson grounded out on a slow roller to second that scored Andersen to bring the Chiefs within a run at 3-2. Nate Samson reached on the second error of the inning by Cumberland moving Gonzalez to third. Marquez Smith delivered an infield single to third to tie the game 3-3. Josh Donaldson followed with a bloop hit to center that scored Samson to give the Chiefs a 4-3 win.

Fort Wayne jumped out to a lead in the second inning against Chiefs starter Ryan Acosta. Justin Baum hit a one out triple to left-center, but Acosta got Danny Payne to pop out to second for a big second out. However, Angel Mercado, a late addition to the line up, hit a two-run homer to left to give the Wizards a 2-0 lead.

The Chiefs quickly answered back in the bottom of the second inning against Wizards starter Robert Woodard. Donaldson lined a double that hugged the first base line to put a runner in scoring position. Kyler Burke followed with a base hit to give the Chiefs runners at the corners with nobody out. Jovan Rosa grounded into a 4-6-3 double play that allowed Donaldson to score and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Peoria's defense gave the Wizards a run in the fourth inning after the first two outs of the inning. With Baum set on first, Payne hit a slow roller to third that Smith charged and threw down the right field line, allowing Baum to score from first and extend the lead to 3-1.

Acosta went six strong innings but did not factor in the decision. He allowed three runs, two of them earned, on five hits while striking out five. Jordan Latham tossed two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit. Marcos Mateo worked a scoreless ninth inning while striking out a pair to pick up the win.

Player of the Game - Josh Donaldson (C) - Donaldson went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and a game-winning RBI in the ninth. He also threw out his 13th potential base stealer.
