Myrtle Beach Pelicans (4-6) vs. Winston-Salem Warthogs (3-3)
Monday, April 14 -- 7:05 PM
BB&T Coastal Field -- Myrtle Beach, SC
Game #11, Home Game #4
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans and the Warthogs meet for the first time in the 2008 season tonight at BB&T Coastal Field.
The two teams split their 2007 season series down the middle, with each team claiming ten wins. The Pelicans fared much better at Ernie Shore Field than they did at home, going 3-6 at BB&T Coastal Field and 7-4 in Winston-Salem. Tonight is the first game of a three-game series stretching until Wednesday.
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: In a match up of right-handers, Tommy Hanson will make his third attempt to pick up his first win of the season. It will be the first home start of the season for Hanson as he matches up John Ely who makes his second overall start and first road start of the season.
Hanson: Has been sensational for the Pelicans thus far this season. He is currently riding an 11 inning scoreless streak after no-hitting the Wilmington Blue Rocks for five innings in the Pelicans season opener (4/4). Hanson was nearly as good in his second outing of the season, blanking the Potomac Nationals for six innings on a lone hit at Pfitzner Stadium (4/9). The 21-year old struck out a career-high 13 batters in his first outing and was one shy of the Pelicans franchise record (Kyle Davies, 14-2004). His 20 total strikeouts lead the Carolina League. Despite his dominating totals, Hanson has not factored in the decision in either of his two starts as the Pelicans have split the two ballgame.
Ely: The #9 rated prospect in the Chicago White Sox organization, Ely was a third round draft choice in 2007. He spent his first professional season with Great Falls in the rookie level Pioneer League. He posted a 6-1 record with an ERA of 3.86. The righty has made one appearance in 2008, shutting out the Lynchburg Hillcats on just one hit over six innings on 4/9.
Ely was drafted out of Miami (OH).
RECORD WEEKEND AT THE BALLPARK: The Pelicans drew a franchise record 15,010 fans to the ballpark for their home opening three-game series with Frederick. That included the largest crowd in team history (6,334) on 4/11 and the fourth largest (5,640) on 4/13, which was also the largest Sunday crowd in team history.
FLURRY OF FEATHERS: The Pelicans made a flurry of roster moves over the course of the last two days. On Sunday, RHP Michael Nix was added from Mississippi (AA); INF Chad Lundahl was added from Rome (A); OF Roberto Alvarez was placed on the voluntarily retired list; RHP Chris Vines was placed on the Disabled List retroactive to 4/10 (Groin).
Today, RHP Michael Nix was promoted to Mississippi (AA); INF Derrick Arnold was promoted to Mississippi (AA); OF Yohan Silva was added from Rome (A); INF Brandon Powell signed as a minor league free agent and placed on Myrtle Beach roster; OF Quentin Davis activated from Disabled List and promoted to Mississippi (AA)
The moves leave the Pelicans roster with 25 active players and five currently on the DL.
