Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho - F.P. Guenette scored a goal and assisted on three others while Marek Schwarz piled up 48 more saves as Alaska took a 2-0 series lead with a 6-4 win over Idaho in front of 2,511 Thursday at Qwest Arena.
The Aces chased Idaho starting goaltender Steve Silverthorn with three goals on five shots in the first 10 minutes of Game Two, beginning with a backhander by Josh Soares off the rush just 1:28 into the opening period. Cam Keith followed with a tip-in 77 seconds later, and a wrist shot by Kimbi Daniels extended Alaska's lead to 3-0 and ended Silverthorn's night with 9:49 left in the frame.
Silverthorn's replacement, Matt Zaba, escaped the rest of the first period unscathed, but when Lance Galbraith was whistled for a charging major against Schwarz, the Aces stretched their advantage to 5-0 with a pair of power play goals 45 seconds apart. Guenette took a pass at his blue line and went the rest of the way unmolested, slipping a backhander past Zaba at 4:45. Soares then found Brett Hemingway, who roofed a shot from point blank range over Zaba. Aaron Gagnon finally put Idaho on the board with a power play goal at 7:53, but Derick Martin answered for the Aces, scoring off the rush in a four-on-four situation to push the gap to 6-1 with 6:56 left in the middle frame.
Taggart Desmet scored with 20 seconds left in the second period, and Blake Forsyth and John Snowden each scored in the final five minutes of regulation, but Alaska's commanding lead was never seriously threatened, despite 25 second period shots by Idaho and a 52-21 advantage for the game. A year after losing both games at home to start the conference final, the Aces have done the same to the higher-seeded Steelheads, leading the best-of-seven series 2-0 heading back to Anchorage for Games Three and Four Saturday and Sunday at 7:15 p.m. Game Five, if necessary, would be played at Sullivan Arena next Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. Games Six and Seven, if necessary would return to Boise.
2008 Kelly Cup playoff tickets are now on sale at the team offices at the corner of 15th and Gambell on weekdays between 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. All playoff games will be broadcast live on the flagship home of Aces hockey, AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
