LANSING- The Lansing Lugnuts May swoon continued on Sunday afternoon as the South Bend SilverHawks topped the Lansing Lugnuts 7-1 at Coveleski Stadium. Lansing is now just 3-10 since the calendar turned to May.
South Bend took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Daniel Perales scored from second base when Gerardo Parra reached on a throwing error by Jonathan Diaz to make it a 1-0 game. Brad Miller then doubled down the line in left to plate Parra and push the advantage to 2-0.
Lansing cut the lead in half when Chris Gutierrez's sacrifice fly scored Josh Bell in the fourth inning.
However the SilverHawks were able to bat around in the bottom half of the frame and plate five runs to put the game away. South Bend had the bases loaded when Yuneski Sanchez grouned a ball back at the pitcher Zach Dials, who then made an errant throw home that allowed two runs to score to make it a 4-1 game. Manny Ferrer then singled to right to plate Justin Brashear to extend the lead to 5-1. Daniel Perales's sacrifice fly and Miller's RBI single capped off the scoring for the Hawks.
Eddie Romero (2-1) tossed five innings and allowed just one unearned run on six hits while picking up the win.
Zach Dials (2-3) suffered the loss for the Lugnuts, allowing seven runs in four frames of work. Only four of the runs were earned.
Lansing (17-16) and South Bend (16-18) will shift the series to Oldsmobile Park on Monday evening for the final two games of the set. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
