Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING- The Lansing Lugnuts scored three runs in the third inning and used another strong pitching performance to take a 5-4 decision over the Great Lakes Loons before 1,117 fans at Oldsmobile Park Monday night. The win completes a four game sweep of the Loons and increases the Lugnuts win streak to five games.

The Loons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Matt Berezay sacrifice fly that scored Trayvon Robinson. It would be the only lead of the series for Great Lakes.

Lansing gained possession of the lead in the third inning when Sean Shoffit dropped an RBI double into the left field corner that brought Scott Campbell home to make it 1-1. Jonathan Diaz, who reached on a single earlier in the frame, then scored on an error by the Loons' third baseman Josh Bell to give the Lugnuts a 2-1 lead. Brian Pettway's sacrifice fly ended the scoring at 3-1.

Great Lakes cut the lead to one run in the fourth when Scott Van Slyke singled home Berezay to make it 3-2.

However the Lugnuts added two more runs in the game, both off of Yuber Rodriguez RBI singles. The first came in the fifth to extend the lead to 4-2, while the second happened in the seventh to make it a 5-2 game.

Paul Phillips came in to close the game for the Lugnuts, but struggled in his outing. He allowed David Sutherland to double home Berezay, which pulled the Loons within two runs. A sacrifice fly by Kenley Jansen plated Sutherland to make it 5-4, but Seth Overbey was brought in to get the final out of the game and seal the win for Lansing.

Nate Starner (1-1) continued the Lugnuts string of great starting pitching, as he threw six innings and allowed just two runs on eight hits in the win.

Lansing (6-1) will continue the homestand on Tuesday night as they welcome the Kane County Cougars to Oldsmobile Park. Kyle Ginley will get the start for the Lugnuts. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
