Dwayne Hay announces his retirement at end of regular season

PENSACOLA, FL - He's been the heart and soul and one of the most recognizable faces of the Pensacola Ice Pilots over the course of three seasons, and now Dwayne Hay hopes to start a new chapter in his career.

Hay announced on Monday evening during the Ice Pilots Radio Show live at Granny Cantrell's that he will retire at the conclusion of this season and is hoping to get into coaching.

The Ice Pilots also announced that they will honor Dwayne Hay at a special retirement ceremony prior to the last home game of the season on Saturday, April 7. That night will also be fan appreciation night when the Ice Pilots host the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 pm at The Hangar.

Hay has only played in 37 games this season due to a number of minor injuries. When he has been in the line-up, Hay has picked up 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points, including six on the power play. The London, Ontario native has not played since early February after being sidelined with a groin injury. He hopes to make it back in time for the final stretch of home games at The Hangar.

Dwayne Hay has appeared in 171 games as a Pensacola Ice Pilot where he has collected 65 goals and 75 assists for 140 points. In his professional career, Hay has played in more than 700 games at the ECHL, AHL and NHL levels. In 79 career NHL games with the Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals, Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, Hay earned two goals and four assists for six points.

When Hay has not been playing he has been on the bench with Head Coach Joe Clark helping as an assistant. In an interim role due to a family emergency for Coach Clark, Hay took over as the Head Coach along with President Greg Schuh for a stretch of four games in mid-December and notched a mark of two wins and two losses.

The Pensacola Ice Pilots return to action this weekend when they travel to South Florida to meet the Everblades on Friday and Saturday night beginning at 7:30 pm eastern, 6:30 pm central time.

Fans can tune into the action on Classic Country AM1620 beginning with Ice Pilots Countdown to Face-off at 6:15 pm on both nights. The play-by-play follows with Denis J. Puska at 6:30 pm. The game is also available on line at www.icepilots.com by clicking on the Sportsjuice logo and video coverage will be provided by the B2 Networks. A high speed internet connection is required in order to view the games.

Hockey Returns to The Hangar on Friday Mar. 16 and Saturday, Mar. 17 when the Ice Pilots host the Gwinnett Gladiators and the South Carolina Stingrays. On Friday, Mar. 16, it's Faith Night and church groups from across the Gulf Coast are invited out to the game. There will be a post game speech by Dr. Ted Traylor of the Olive Baptist Church and Ice Pilots forward Dallas Steward.

On Saturday, Mar. 17 it's St. Patrick's Day and the Ice Pilot will wear their St. Patty's jerseys and an auction follows immediately after the game.
