Condors Put Ice Dogs On the Ropes with 4-1 Victory in Game Five

LONG BEACH, Calif., - Andrew Ianiero's short-handed goal in the first period paced the Bakersfield Condors to a 4-1 victory over the Long Beach Ice Dogs in Game Five of the best-of-seven Pacific Division Semifinals. Marty Magers made 33 saves in his first career Kelly Cup Playoffs start to give Bakersfield a 3-2 series lead.

The Ice Dogs struck first when James Sanford sent a wrist shot past the lower left side of Bakersfield goaltender Marty Magers on the power play. Christian Larrivee assisted as the Ice Dogs took a 1-0 lead just 1:44 into the game.

Alexandre Bolduc poked the puck from the neutral zone onto the Condors right wing for Andrew Ianiero on a Long Beach power play. Ianiero deked a backhand before firing a forehand shot past the left side of Ice Dogs goaltender Jaroslav Halak to tie the game at 1-1 with 1:29 remaining in the first period.

On a second-period four-on-four, Sean Venedam stripped the puck from Long Beach defenseman James Sanford behind the Ice Dogs net. Venedam quickly connected with Kevin St. Jacques, who flipped the puck past Halak to give the Bakersfield a 2-1 lead at 7:36 of the second.

Dave Bonk made it 3-1 when he finished a two-on-one rush with Mathieu Brunelle with 3:00 left until the second intermission. Oriel McHugh was credited with an assist to give Bakersfield a two-goal lead.

Long Beach pulled Halak for the extra skater with a power play chance late in the third, but Scott Borders sealed the win with the short-handed empty-netter for a 4-1 lead in the final minute.

Marty Magers earned the win with 33 saves on 34 Long Beach shots. Jaroslav Halak was credited with the loss despite making 27 stops on 31 shots faced.

Other notes: The Condors lead the series three games to two and can advance to the Pacific Division Finals with a victory either Friday or Saturday night. Mathieu Brunelle has scored at least a point in each of the Condors' five playoff games this year.

Game Six will take place in Bakersfield on Friday, April 21st at 7:00pm. All fans in attendance will receive a Condors Blackout Foam Rally Stick courtesy of KGET-TV 17 and The New AT&T. All fans are encouraged to "Blackout" the Ice Dogs by wearing black to the game. If necessary, Game Seven will take place at the Rabobank Arena on Saturday, April 22nd at 7:00pm.
