Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gwinnett Gladiators defeated South Carolina on Wednesday night 3-1 to complete a 3-games-to-none sweep of the Stingrays and advance to the South Division Championship. Gwinnett will face the winner of the Greenville and Florida series in the South Division Championship.
The sweep of the South Carolina Stingrays was the first time in franchise history that the Gladiators swept a team in a playoff series. The road win was just the second time in Gladiators history that Gwinnett clinched a playoff series on the road. The first time Gwinnett clinched a series on the road was during the 2004 Kelly Cup playoffs when Gwinnett defeated the Mississippi Sea Wolves 2-1 in overtime in Game 5 of the Central Division Semi-Finals.
Gwinnett defeated South Carolina 5-3 in Game 1 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center while overcoming a 4-1 second period deficit to defeat the Stingrays 5-4 in overtime for the Game 2 win. The Gladiators closed out the series against South Carolina defeating the Stingrays 3-1 in Game 3 to complete the sweep.
Gwinnett will face the winner of the Greenville Grrrowl and Florida Everblades South Division Semi-Final Series in the Division Championship Series. Florida leads the best-of-five series 2-games-to-none with Game 3 of the series on Friday in Greenville. Game four, if necessary, is also in Greenville on Saturday night with Game 5, if necessary, in Florida on Sunday.
The Gladiators will open the Division Championship series at the Arena at Gwinnett Center against either Greenville or Florida on Wednesday, April 26th at 7:05 p.m. while Game 2 will also be at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Friday, April 28th at 7:35 p.m. Fans should use Game "C" tickets, which are now on sale at area Ticketmaster locations and at the Arena at Gwinnett Center box office, for Wednesday's game and should use Game "D" tickers for Friday's game.
The Gwinnett Gladiators continue the 2006 ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs season at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Wednesday, April 26th for Game 1 of the Division Finals at 7:05 p.m. The Gladiators offer several ticket packages for different needs as well as group outings, suites and birthday parties.
