
RiverKings make moves, Goetz announces retirement

SOUTHAVEN --- The Memphis RiverKings made several roster moves today leading into their games this weekend at Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Kevin McClelland announced that the team has signed center Rob Ouimette (wah MET) and forward Sheldon Wenzel. He also announced that the team has waived defenseman Drew Terry and that forward Ken Goetz has retired.
Goetz was in his sixth pro season and his second season with the RiverKings after signing before last season. This season, he had one assist and a team-leading 90 penalty minutes. Last season he led the team in majors with 33 and was second in penalty minutes with 277. In a career that also saw him play for the Corpus Christi Rayz (CHL), the Louisiana Ice Gators (ECHL), Florence Pride (ECHL), Peoria Rivermen (ECHL) and Elmira Jackals (UHL), Goetz had 11 goals, 14 assists and 1337 PIM in 229 games. He remains Corpus Christi's single season record holder for penalty minutes with his total of 374 in the 2002-2003 season.
Terry signed with the RiverKings on Saturday prior the team's game with Colorado. The Memphis native played 13 games with the RiverKings in 2004-2005.
Wenzel was acquired by the RiverKings on Wednesday in a trade with Austin for future considerations. In 20 games with the Ice Bats this season, the 21 year old Wenzel had a goal, two assists and 64 penalty minutes. Prior to turning pro this season, the Brooks, Alberta native played in the Alberta Junior and Quebec Major Junior Hockey Leagues. With his hometown Brooks Bandits of the AJHL, he amassed 432 penalty minutes in the 2002-2003 season. He followed that season with 264 and 262 PIM's respectively in the Quebec League with Lewiston in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. Offensively in his junior career, the 6-2, 220 pound rookie had 45 goals and 35 assists in 184 games.
Ouimette, a rookie, started this season with Youngstown before being waived on 12/9. In 19 games with the Steelhounds, the Iron Bridge, Ontario native had one goal, four assists and 20 PIM. Prior to this season, he played four seasons at Division III University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He finished his collegiate career with 52 goals and 43 assists in 101 games. His 20 goals during his senior season ranked 11th nationally in Division III NCAA hockey.
Memphis plays the Oilers in Tulsa tonight at 7:35 followed by a game at Oklahoma City Saturday night at 7:35. The team returns home Tuesday night to host the Austin Ice Bats at the DeSoto Civic Center at 7:05.
