Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Hidalgo, TX - The Corpus Christi Rayz played another close game Friday night, however three goals by the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in the final five and a half minutes of the game gave them their second win of the season over Corpus Christi. The Rayz and Bees will meet again next Friday night, December 23rd at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi. The win moved the Bees into sole possession of second place in the Southeast Division - two points ahead of the Rayz. Corpus Christi's record fell to 10-11-1 for 21 points in 22 games this season.
Corpus Christi scored the first goal of the game for the fourth time in their last five contests. Rayz defenseman Jay Hardwick stepped in front of an outlet attempt at the left point, and skated to the top of the circle where he beat Evan Lindsay (27 shots, 26 saves) with a shot into the to right corner. It was the first goal of Hardwick's two-season career, and came assisted by Mike Rees. The assist marked Rees' second in as many games in a Rayz uniform. Rees was the inaugural captain for the Bees in the 2003-2004 season. The Bees outshot the Rayz 15-10 in the first period, but the Rayz took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
The Killer Bees came back in the second period to tie the contest at 1-1 with a late goal. With Rayz goaltender, Brent Zelenewich (44 shots, 41 saves) knocked down in the crease against the left post, Bobby Davis wrapped around to stuff the puck into the net on the right side. Davis' sixth goal of the year was assisted by Ryan Shmyr and Bill Newson.
The Killer Bees took their first lead of the game with just under five and a half minutes remaining. Matic Kralj converted a rebound from the bottom of the slot past Zelenewich to give the Bees the lead 2-1. Rio Grande then added a breakaway goal from Newson and an empty goal from Daymen Bencharski to seal the game for the Killer Bees. The Rayz went 0 for 8 on the power play and held the Bees scoreless in six attempts. Corpus Christi now has one goal in their last 45 power plays and has killed off 41 of 43 penalties.
The Rayz continue their three-game road trip in Austin on Saturday night, and Amarillo on Tuesday night. Corpus Christi will return home to host the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Friday, December 23rd for a Christmas Celebration at the American Bank Center. It's also Harley Davidson Men's Night presented by Time Warner and Classic Rock 104.5FM. All men 18 and older will receive discount ticket vouchers at Harley Davidson of Corpus Christi.
