July 2, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Tucson, AZ-The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today that Tucson Sidewinders Hitting Coach Lorenzo Bundy has been promoted to serve as Bench Coach of the Diamondbacks as part of the team's restructuring of the coaching staff. Bundy replaces Robin Yount who resigned, and will serve under newly appointed Manager Al Pedrique, who managed the Sidewinders during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. A replacement for Bundy is yet to be named by the Diamondbacks organization.

Bundy, 44, was in his first year as Hitting Coach for the Sidewinders after serving in the same role for Double-AA El Paso in 2003. Under Bundy's guidance, Tucson's offense ranked 3rd in AVG (.294) and 5th in R (452) in the Pacific Coast League at the time of his promotion. Lorenzo has a 357-397 record (.473) in 6 seasons as a minor league manager in the Montreal (1990-94) and Florida (1997) organizations and has coached professionally since 1989.

"Its the ultimate challenge for anyone who has been in the minor leagues as long as I have to get this opportunity," said Bundy. "I have some mixed emotions right now because some people lost their jobs. "Things aren't going well in Phoenix right now and our job will be to get them playing better and win some ballgames. The same things we were trying to do here (in Tucson)."

Pedrique, 43, opened the year as the Diamondbacks Third Base Coach after managing Tucson during the previous two seasons. Al led Tucson to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1994-95. Pedrique owns a 463-433 record while managing at the minor league level. In addition to his time with the Diamondbacks, Pedrique has also managed in the Royals (1995-97) and Astros (1999-2000) organizations.

Al replaces Bob Brenly, who was dismissed from his managerial role by the Diamondbacks earlier today. Other coaching changes include the dismissal of Chuck Kniffin from his Pitching Coach duties. Mark Davis will move from Bullpen Coach to Pitching Coach and will be replaced in the pen by Dennis Lewallyn. Tommy Jones, Director of Player Development, will take over as First Base Coach with Glenn Sherlock moving from first to third.

The Sidewinders are in the middle of an 3-game road trip versus the Sacramento RiverCats. Tucson will return home to host the Las Vegas 51's for a Star-Spangled Spectacular featuring a "3-D" Fireworks show on Sunday July 4th at 6:00 p.m. For more information on the Tucson Sidewinders, ticket plans, merchandise or sponsorship opportunities please call 520-434-1021 or visit www.tucsonsidewinders.com
