Calgary Hitmen News Release
Red Deer, AB - Cael Zimmerman scored his first career Western Hockey League overtime goal to power the Calgary Hitmen past the Red Deer Rebels 4-3 on Thursday night at Westerner Park Centrium.
In their first meeting in nearly two months, Calgary never trailed building leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before the Zimmerman heroics. Captain Josh Prokop, Jackson van de Leest and Riley Fiddler-Schultz provided the other Hitmen goals while sophomore forward Sean Tschigerl added an assist to extend his career-high point scoring streak to nine games. Riley Stotts also chipped in a pair of helpers.
Carter Anderson, Jace Weir and Chris Douglas supplied the Red Deer markers with the Douglas effort coming with 7:12 remaining to force extra time.
The Rebels outshot the Hitmen 35-29 but goaltender Jack McNaughton made 32 saves to record the victory and in the process eclipsed 2,000 career saves. Byron Fancy turned aside 25 shots for the home side.
With the win, the Hitmen improve to 9-7-2-0 while Red Deer slips to 2-15-3-0.
Calgary is right back on the ice tomorrow, Friday, April 30 to host the Central Division leading Edmonton Oil Kings. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Seven Chiefs Sportsplex on Tsuut'ina Nation.
