Kamloops, BC- The Prince George Cougars got back into the win column on Sunday, beating the Vancouver Giants 5-2 at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops.
With the win, the Cougars extended their point streak to four games (3-0-1-0) and moved back to the .500 mark, as they are now 7-7-2-1 through 17 games.
It was a big night for Koehn Ziemmer, as the 16-year-old rookie scored twice inside the first six-minutes of the game and was named the first star. Craig Armstrong, Tyson Upper, and Blake Eastman also scored. Taylor Gauthier earned his fifth win as he stopped 29 of 31 shots.
Tristen Nielsen scored both of Vancouver's goals. Goaltender Trent Miner started the game but was replaced by Drew Sim after he surrendered four goals on nine shots. Sim stopped six of seven in the final 39-mintues.
Sunday was Ziemmer's first two-goal game of his young career. He now has three goals in the last three games and his coach says he's a only going to get better, "He loves to score, you can tell when he shoots the puck, he's trying to shoot it through the back of the net," said Cougars' General Manager & Head Coach Mark Lamb. "It's not just the scoring as he can play heavy, and he goes into traffic. What he can be something special in this league."
Ziemmer and Armstrong put the Cougars' up 3-0 six-minutes into the game. Ziemmer's first of the night came just one minute and 54-seconds in. Then, Armstrong made it 2-0 just past the four-minute mark. One minute and 49-seconds after that it was Ziemmer scoring again to make it 3-0. The Cougars scored three goals on eight shots in the opening frame.
Upper added to the lead 44-seconds into the second period. The 19-year-old made it 4-1 after he capitalized on a turnover in the Giants' end. Eastman made it 5-1 late in the second when he picked the corner after a burst of speed down the right-wing; his first goal of the season.
Nielsen scored the only goal in the third period, as the Cougars improved to 3-0-0-1 in four games against Vancouver.
