New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Metairie, LA â John Buck was 2-4 with 3 RBI to lead the New Orleans Zephyrs (15-12) past the Memphis Redbirds (8-20) 6 to 2 on Thursday Night at Zephyr Field in front of 2,689.
New Orleans scored two runs in the second, third and fifth innings as the Zephyrs swept the four game series from the Redbirds. Ryan Huffman and Kyle Logan had RBI singles in the second. Buck had an RBI single in the third along with a RBI groundout from Jason Alfaro who was promoted from Class AA round Rock prior to the game. Buck closed out the scoring in the fifth with a two run triple.
That's all Zephyrs starting pitcher Jonathan Johnson would need. Johnson (2-2) pitched eight innings allowing one run on only three hits, striking out five while walking none. Kirk Bullinger came in the ninth with the bases loaded allowing one run to score but retired the final two batters of the game to record his second save of the season.
Jimmy Journell (1-4) suffered the loss pitching four innings allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits. The Zephyrs allowed only six runs in the four game series. The six runs allowed by Z's pitchers ties for the fewest allowed in a four game series since the team moved to New Orleans from Denver in 1993.
The Zephyrs open a four game series at Colorado Spring on Friday at 8:05 P.M. The game can be heard on WTIX-AM 690 and at www.zephyrsbaseball.com with Tim Grubbs calling the action.
