For Nashville the win salvages a split of this now completed four-game series with the Trappers. Even with the loss to the East Division leading Sounds the Trappers have still won 10 of their last 16 games. The Trapper bullpen, which has been stellar of late, gave up two late-inning home runs, the first time the pen had surrendered a longball since April 19 in Sacramento. Edmonton leads the All-Time series against Nashville 22-18. The two clubs do not meet again during the 2003 regular season. Edmonton begins a four-game series against the Tucson Sidewinders Friday night at TELUS Field.
The Sounds took the early lead with two runs off Trappers' starter Britt Reames (1-3) in the top of the first inning. Center fielder Tike Redman reached on an infield hit and advanced to second on a base hit by shortstop Aaron Holbert. With one out Rivera doubled down the right field line, plating both runners to give Nashville a two-run advantage. The Trappers quickly tied the contest with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Second baseman Luis Figueroa led off the inning with a single to center. Terrmel Sledge drew a walk to put runners at first and second and Edwards Guzman followed with a two-out triple that tied the game. Nashville scored two more times in the top of the second off Reames. Humberto Cota and Tomas de la Rosa started the inning with back-to-back singles and Reames hit Ryan Vogelsong with a pitch to load the bases. Cota scored on a wild pitch and de la Rosa crossed home plate as Holbert grounded out later in the frame.
Nashville left fielder John Barnes started the fifth inning with an infield single. He advanced to third on a throwing error by Trappers' third baseman Scott Hodges and scored on a double by Mike Gulan. With two out Cota singled to left-center field, plating Gulan from third base with the Sounds sixth run. Edmonton cut the lead back to three runs in the bottom of the inning as Medrano led off with a single, moved to second on a base hit by pinch-hitter Dionys Cesar and scored on a double by Sledge. The Trappers bullpen held the deficit to three runs until the eighth inning when Barnes reached on an error by Hodges and Rivera followed with his second home run of the season to give Nashville an 8-3 advantage. The Trappers picked up a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning when reliever Shawn Camp walked Medrano with the bases loaded, forcing home Valentino Pascucci with the Trappers fourth run.
