New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The New Orleans Zephyrs' hitting woes at home continued on Thursday, as the Oklahoma RedHawks captured a 3-1 win in the first of a four-game series between the American Southern rivals. Oklahoma starter Luis Mendoza retired all 12 batters he faced before giving way to Dustin Nippert (4-1), who allowed singles to Valentino Pascucci and Jesus Feliciano leading off the fifth. But Nippert got Chris Aguila to foul out, then induced a double play from Michel Abreu to escape the jam.
Nippert (4-1) earned the win by retiring the final nine batters he faced, five by strikeout, including striking out the side in the sixth.
New Orleans starter Ruddy Lugo (4-4) allowed just three hits over seven innings, but suffered from early wildness, walking two of the first three batters of the game, as Oklahoma scratched out a first inning run.
Travis Metcalf provided the eventual game-winning run in the fifth, homering on a 1-0 pitch to lead off the inning.
The Zephyrs finally broke through in the bottom of the ninth, as Argenis Reyes and Pascucci doubled one out apart. Wes Littleton entered the game to record the final out, a grounder to first by Feliciano.
The second game of the series is Friday at 7:00 p.m., when RHP Brian Stokes will face LHP Matt Harrison.
