Portland Beavers News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Mike Massaro's two-out double in the bottom of the eighth plated Landon Powell with the go-ahead run as the Sacramento River Cats fought back the Portland Beavers for a 7-6 victory Thursday night at Raley Field.
The River Cats (38-22) tallied 14 hits, getting two hits apiece from six different players, and salvaged a game they led 6-0 at one point.
Kirk Saarloos (6-1) beat the Beavers (29-29) for a third time this season, despite giving up six runs and seven hits over his eight innings. Jerry Blevins picked up his seventh save with an inning of work behind Saarloos.
Nick Hundley was 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Beavers, who have lost three games in a row overall and four straight to the River Cats going back to last week at PGE Park.
Ten River Cats came to the plate during their six-run third inning that chased starter Clay Hensley in the process. The first five batters got hits off Hensley, with Brooks Conrad hitting a two-run double as the fifth batter in the frame to end the right-hander's fourth rehab start of the season. Richie Robnett and Ryan Sweeney added RBI singles off Cesar Ramos to cap the six-run rally.
Despite a strong relief effort, Ramos (5-5) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs and six hits over six innings in his first relief appearance since the 2006 campaign.
The Beavers cut Sacramento's lead to two in the fourth, as Hundley drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single, Will Venable scored on Vincent Sinisi's groundout and Hundley scored from third when third baseman Jeff Baisley's error allowed Matt Antonelli to reach.
An inning later, Brian Myrow walked, Chip Ambres doubled, and the Beavers tied the game on an RBI groundout by Venable and Hundley's second run-scoring single of the game.
The Beavers take on the River Cats again at Raley Field Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: The Beavers added left-hander Sean Henn to the roster after he was outrighted by San Diego earlier in the week ... Portland's Peter Ciofrone had an eight-game hitting streak snapped.
