Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Las Vegas, NV - The Las Vegas 51's turned three errors into six unearned runs and cruised past the Sidewinders 13-3 on Thursday night at Cashman Field.
Jamie D'Antona committed back to back throwing errors to open the second inning which set the stage for a five run 51's outburst. John-Ford Griffin's RBI double followed the two miscues and after a walk to Sergio Garcia, A.J. Ellis tripled to center to plate a pair. Jason Repko's RBI single to left capped the scoring in the inning and gave Las Vegas a 5-0 lead.
Justin Orenduff locked the Sidewinders up over five innings for his second win of the season. Orenduff (2-2) blanked Tucson on four hits. He struck out seven.
The 51's widened their lead with three more unearned runs in the fifth. Jesus Merchan's two out throwing error allowed a run to score and Ellis followed with his second two run triple of the night.
The Sidewinders scored their only runs late with two in the sixth and one in the eighth. Josh Whitesell drew a bases loaded walk to plate Tucson's first run of the night and Donnie Kelly followed with a RBI base hit to left. Robby Hammock delivered a pinch hit RBI single in the eighth for the Sidewinders final tally of the game.
Hammock has hit in all eight games he's played with the Sidewinders and has eight RBI.
Vegas closed their scoring with five in the ninth against an erratic Brandon Medders. The Sidewinders reliever hit Sergio Garcia to open the inning but retired the next two men he faced. Medders then suddenly lost the strike zone as he walked the next two hitters before surrendering a two run single to Xavier Paul and a three run home run to Jon Lindsey.
The Sidewinders and 51's play game two of their series on Friday night at Cashman Field. Right-hander Esmerling Vasquez (1-1, 4.63) starts for Tucson against right-hander Miguel Pinango (3-3, 4.26) for Las Vegas. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:55.
