Zagone Nearly No-Hits Pelicans, Keys Win 3-0

Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD - With Rick Zagone nearly throwing a no-hitter, the Keys rolled 3-0 over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans for their second straight win.

Through six innings, Zagone had not allowed a hit and the only batter to reach base for the Pelicans was due to a catcher's interference in the first inning.

Yet the first batter he faced in the seventh inning, Jake Skole, who reached earlier on the catcher's interference, broke up the no-hitter with a bloop single into right field. Zagone was pulled three batters later after allowing a walk.

Zagone was just nine outs shy of recording what would have been the Keys' first no-hitter since Nathan Moreau's no-hitter in June of 2010 against Salem.

The Pelicans, whose only base runners came by way of a catcher's interference, hit, and a walk, were unable to score against Zagone or relief pitchers David Walters and Andy Loomis the rest of the way.

Tied at zero, the Keys exploded for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead. A Matt Sweeney RBI double gave the Keys their first run and then the next batter, Mike Flacco, hit a home run over the left-field wall to instantly make it 3-0.

The dominant pitching performance allowed the Keys' 3-0 advantage to hold as they won their second straight.

The Keys will try and make it three in a row tomorrow night when RHP Justin Moore (0-2, 7.56 ERA) takes the mound for the Keys. RHP Wilmer Font (0-2, 9.00 ERA) counters for Myrtle Beach.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM and live coverage starts at 6:40 PM on 1450 AM The Source and online at WTHU.org.
