Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA (MAY 1, 2012) - The Dash scored a season-high 15 runs and extended their winning streak to nine games with a 15-6 thumping of the Potomac Nationals Tuesday night at Pfitzner Stadium.
The Dash (16-8) matched the longest winning streak since the Winston-Salem organization became the Dash prior to the 2009 season. Winston also won nine straight from April 14-22, 2010. This nine-game run is tied for the fourth-longest winning streak in the minors in 2012.
Winston is two wins away from minor league baseball's longest streak this season. The Bakersfield Blaze won 11 in a row in the High-A California League last month.
Winston-Salem jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Trayce Thompson brought home a pair with a double down the left field line. Two batters later, Brady Shoemaker's groundout plated Thompson.
Potomac (8-14) plated a pair of runs on sacrifice flies to pull within one through five, but the Dash then pulled away with two monster innings. Winston-Salem posted a four-run sixth. During the frame, Nick Ciolli singled home a run, Jake Oester brought home another with a double and Marcus Semien cleared the fence with a two-run homer.
The Dash put the contest out of reach with a six-run seventh. Five different men drove in a run during the frame, with Dan Black capping off the scoring with a two-run single.
Black and Shoemaker each knocked RBI singles in the top of the ninth to push Winston's run total to 15. Black finished with a 5-for-6 night, becoming the first Dash hitter to boast a five-hit game this season.
Dash starter Matt Heidenreich (2-1) allowed five runs, four of which were earned, in five and a third innings. Out of the bullpen, Kyle Bellamy whiffed four in a scoreless inning and two-thirds. Nick McCully pitched the final two innings and struck out five, which is a season-high for a Winston-Salem reliever.
During their nine-game win streak, the Dash have scored 81 runs, or nine per contest, and knocked around 115 hits. On the flip side, Winston's pitching staff has allowed only 32 runs, which is less than four per night.
Game three of this four-game set is Wednesday night at 7:05. Right-hander Jake Petricka (2-2, 5.50 ERA) takes to the mound for the Dash against fellow righty Adam Olbrychowski (0-3, 7.29 ERA). Pre-game coverage on wsdash.com begins at 6:50.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark Friday night for a three-game series with the Salem Red Sox. For more information or to purchase your tickets, visit wsdash.com or call (336) 714-2287.
