Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Francis Martes earned his first Double-A victory as Corpus Christi blanked Frisco 5-0 Wednesday night at Whataburger Field before 4,093.
Martes, at 19 the second-youngest player to compete in the Texas League this season, effectively mixed his fastball and changeup to the tune of nine swinging strikeouts. The native of Cotui in the Dominican Republic scattered five singles and walked three. Frisco had multi-hit frames against Martes (1-0) in the first and sixth, but the 6-foot, 170-pound right-hander stranded two RoughRiders in each case.
Martes' pitch count Wednesday was 99/57. The right-hander is Houston's No. 4 prospect according to MLB.com
As was the case Tuesday, a double play minimized first-inning damage to Frisco (60-74; 31-33). A.J. Reed's Minor League-leading 122nd RBI scored Danry Vasquez to put the Hooks up 1-0. Reed's opposite-field single to left was the third hit in four batters off Chad Bell. The frame concluded when right fielder Preston Beck caught Jio Mier's fly and gunned Teoscar Hernandez at the plate.
Bell was victimized by two unearned runs in the second. Lead-off man Conrad Gregor reached on an error and tallied when Vasquez posted his second single of the game. Leo Heras's sacrifice fly plated Chan-Jong Moon.
Corpus Christi (85-50; 37-28) padded its lead during the third, Bell lifted for Adam Quintana without recording an out. Jack Mayfield drew a lead-off walk and motored home on Mier's double to left-center. Mier crossed as the result of a Moon fielder's choice for a 5-0 advantage.
The Hooks rapped Bell (7-13) for six hits, and he walked three and struck out two in a 73-pitch outing (43 strikes).
Quintana proved effective in holding the line, registering seven strikeouts against three hits and two free passes over four innings.
Aaron West, who relieved Martes and struck out the side in the eighth, whiffed four over two innings. The contest featured 26 total strikeouts.
Vasquez enjoyed a four-single night as the Hooks out-hit Frisco 11-6.
The series resumes Thursday at 7:05, Corpus Christi's Edison Frias (2-1) vs. southpaw Victor Payano (4-3). It's Stripes Thirsty Thursday and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Night.
