Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Arkansas Travelers bounced back with a 4-2 win to even the series against the Springfield Cardinals before 4,204 fans at Hammons Field on Wednesday night. The Travelers increase their division lead over the Cardinals to two games with five remaining, including two more head-to-head match-ups at Hammons Field on Thursday and Friday.
Cardinals RHP Andrew Morales (L, 4-8) and Arkansas RHP Albert Suarez (W, 10-9) exchanged a pair of scoreless innings to start the contest, before Arkansas (33-32, 69-65) broke through in the top of the third. With 2B Sherman Johnson on at third and two down, a wild pitch skipped away from C Michael Ohlman, enabling Johnson to dart in from third base. After a walk from CF Chad Hinshaw, RF Blake Gailen sent a two-run homer over the right field fence, opening the Travs lead to 3-0.
Morales got back on track with a scoreless top of the fourth, before the Cardinals (31-34, 61-74) swung onto the board in the bottom of the fourth. After DH Mike O'Neill opened the inning with a free pass, LF Nick Martini drove a two-run home run over the fence in the left field corner to bring Springfield within one run, 3-2.
Morales kept the Cardinals close with three more scoreless innings to close his seven-inning start, limiting the Travs to just the three runs on five hits while striking out five. After the two-run shot in the third, Morales retired 12 of the next 14 batters, allowing just a single and a man to reach on an error the rest of the way.
Arkansas added an unearned insurance run in the top of the eighth, but RHP Silfredo Garcia kept the Cardinals close with scoreless work otherwise through the eighth and ninth. However, Arkansas RHP Greg Mahle (S, 14) countered with 1.2 scoreless innings of his own, closing the 4-2 win for the Travelers.
