York Pounds out Doubleheader Sweep
May 7, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
Bryan Pounds delivered the game-winning hits in the team's final at bat in both games, as the York Revolution swept a doubleheader from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 3-1 and 2-1 (8 innings) on a chilly Saturday night in front of 3,496 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Revs (11-6) remain a game in front of Sugar Land for first place in the Freedom Division and extend their winning streak to six consecutive games, their longest in two years. York will go for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m.
Pounds broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run triple to deep right in the top of the seventh in the opener, before providing an extra inning RBI single to right-center, also breaking a 1-1 tie in the nightcap.
Jason Repko opened the twinbill with a first inning leadoff homer to left, the Revs' first since Justin Greene opened a game at Sugar Land with a homer on September 20, 2014.
York's game one starter Matt Neil was solid, allowing only a fourth inning run on a ground single to right by Jon Dziomba in his four innings of work.
Tony Pena (2-0) picked up the win with two shutout innings in relief.
Crabs starter Gaby Hernandez (0-1) retired 15 consecutive batters until the seventh when Telvin Nash reached on a hit by pitch to spark the game-winning rally. With one out, James Simmons lined a single to right, only the second hit allowed by Hernandez in 6.1 innings. Pounds then greeted reliever Navery Moore with a drive to deep right for the game-winning two-run triple, plating Nash as well as Simmons sprinting directly behind him all the way from first base.
Mike DeMark fired a perfect seventh with a pair of strikeouts for his sixth save, tying for the league lead.
It was the long ball that opened the scoring in the nightcap as Nash obliterated a line drive solo homer to left leading off the fourth for a 1-0 York lead. The home run was Nash's league-leading seventh, and sixth in his last 10 games.
York starter James Simmons cruised deep into the game and had struck out six of seven batters before his only mistake, a first pitch home run to left-center by Zach Wilson, previously 3-for-41, tying the game at 1-1 with two outs in the sixth. Simmons (3-0) rebounded with a scoreless seventh to force extras, including starting a 1-6-3 double play on a failed sacrifice bunt try by Angel Flores. The right-hander needed just 80 pitches (60 strikes) to turn in the Revs' longest start of the young season.
After stranding five runners the previous two innings, the Revs went to work in the eighth as Joel Guzman took a close 3-2 pitch for a leadoff walk. With one out, pinch-runner Nick Ferdinand moved up on a wild pitch, setting the stage for Pounds who lined another game-winning hit with a single to right-center.
Michael Click allowed only an infield hit, claiming his first Revs save in the bottom of the eighth.
