Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (5-10) were defeated by the Long Island Ducks (8-6) 5-1 in the opener of a three game weekend series at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday night. Long Island wins their seventh consecutive game while handing the Bluefish their season high fifth straight setback.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher David Anderson (0-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering three runs on ten hits in four innings of work, walking one, striking out three while allowing two wild pitches and hitting two batters. Long Island Starting Pitcher Mark Blackmar (2-0) earned the victory after throwing seven scoreless innings, giving up just two hits, striking out seven. The right hander retired the first 13 batters he faced in the contest. The game included a rain delay of one hour and thirty minutes.
Long Island got on the board in the top half of the second inning off Anderson on an RBI double by Blake Tekotte, plating Cody Puckett with the first run of the game after he opened the frame with a single, and the visitors had the early 1-0 lead. The Ducks would add a pair of runs in the fourth again off Anderson as Mike Dowd drove home Dan Lyons with a double. Later in the inning Lew Ford laced an opposite field run scoring single to right with two men out, driving home Dowd to give Long Island a 3-0 cushion. Blackmar had a perfect game going until Luis Rodriguez registered the first hit of the ballgame for the Bluefish with a clean single to right with two out in the home half of the fifth inning.
Bridgeport would get on the board for the first time on the night in the bottom half of the eighth inning off Ducks reliever Dan Blewett. Josh Vitters and Luis Domoromo began the uphill climb with back to back singles to start the rally, and Ruben Sosa Jr. drove home Vitters with a two out RBI single to make it 3-1 Long Island. The base knock extended Sosa Jr.'s on base streak to a team high 13 consecutive games. Blewett was able to limit the damage by inducing Wilkin Ramirez to pop out to the shortstop Lyons after he represented the go ahead run. Long Island would add a pair of unearned insurance runs of 'Fish closer David Carpenter in the ninth inning to take their largest lead of the night at 5-1. Amalio Diaz shut the door on a Bridgeport comeback by registering a clean frame in the final turn at bat for the home team, striking out one in the process. Sosa Jr., Rodriguez, Vitters, and Domoromo, and Jose Cuevas each had one of the five overall hits for the Bluefish. Photo provided courtesy of Dave Csordas.
