Frisco RoughRiders News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - Behind five scoreless innings from left-handed pitcher Yohander Mendez (3-0), the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, knocked off the San Antonio Missions 3-2 in the series finale Friday night at Wolff Stadium.
Mendez, the 13th-ranked prospect in the Rangers System, according to MLBPipeline.com, kept the Missions (18-40) scoreless over five innings, allowing four hits and striking out a season-high seven hitters, while not walking anyone in his fourth career Double-A start.
Mendez battled against Padres 10th-ranked prospect (MLBPipeline.com) Dinelson Lamet (0-1), who kept the Riders (34-24) quiet through his first three innings. However, Frisco broke through against the righty in the fourth, striking on a RBI triple off the bat of Andy Ibanez, who collected his first hit and RBI as a Double-A player simultaneously, putting Frisco ahead 1-0.
The RoughRiders tallied two more in the sixth once Mendez had exited, pushing runs across on RBI singles from Joe Jackson and Luis Mendez.
The Missions got on the board with a run in both the sixth and seventh innings against reliever Jose Valdespina, but Reed Garrett came on and preserved the lead. He worked out of jams in both the seventh and eighth innings. Adam Parks earned his sixth save with a scoreless ninth inning.
After splitting the four-game series in San Antonio, the Riders return home to start a nine-game homestand, beginning Saturday at 7:05 against the Midland RockHounds. Another highly-rated pitching prospect, right-hander Luis Ortiz (1-2, 4.61 ERA) will start against Midland's Chris Jensen (3-4, 5.66 ERA). Fans can watch the action live on MiLB.TV (subscription required) or listen for free on the Frisco RoughRiders Radio Network, the TuneIn Radio App, and the MiLB First Pitch App.
The nine-game homestand begins Saturday with Vulcan Salute to Star Trek Night. The highly anticipated Choctaw Lazy River will also be open for the first time during the homestand.
