Iowa Wolves News Release

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Wolves, the NBA G League affiliate of the Minnesota Timberwolves, has joined forces with the YMCA of Greater Des Moines to create a new teen basketball league for the local metro area.

The Iowa Wolves Metro League is open to high school students (grades 9-12) in the Des Moines metro and surrounding suburbs who are not part of their high school basketball programs. Participants will be assigned to teams in either the Freshman/Sophomore or Junior/Senior division and compete against other teams in their division in an eight-week season, with league playoffs held during the ninth week.

"We currently have almost 1,300 kids playing in YMCA youth basketball leagues, which are open to kids in kindergarten through eighth grade," said Tavian Banks, associate executive director of the John R. Grubb YMCA and director of the Iowa Wolves Metro League. "We wanted to provide an opportunity for kids to continue playing competitive and structured basketball once they outgrow our youth program and are proud to team with the Iowa Wolves to make that happen."

"We're thrilled to give back to our community and support the growth of the game for all ages, especially where's there's been a void in its continuation," said Ryan Grant, president of the Iowa Wolves. "Basketball is not only a healthy activity, but a terrific way to develop team-building skills that provide benefits throughout life."

Thanks to financial support from the Wolves, the cost to participate in the Metro League is just $15 per player, which includes a game jersey. Registration opens December 13 and runs through January 3, 2022, with play beginning the week of January 10. To register, visit www.dmymca.org/basketball.
