
Yard Goats Fall in Extras on Walk-off Grand Slam

Bridgewater, NJ- Trailing 1-0 in the 10th inning with two out, Somerset catcher Ben Rice cranked a walk-off grand slam home run leading the Patriots to a 4-1 victory against the Hartford Yard Goats on Tuesday night at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, New Jersey. It was the first game of a six-game series. The game was scoreless until the Yard Goats scored a run on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead in the 10th inning. Yard Goats starter Connor Van Scoyoc was outstanding and fired seven scoreless innings and allowed just three hits.
Hartford stranded nine baserunners, and had the bases loaded with no outs in the sixth inning, and second and third and no outs in the seventh inning and did not score. Somerset starter Chase Hampton and relievers Tanner Myatt and Jack Neely allowed just one run over 10 innings.
Connor Van Scoyoc did not allow a single hit over the first four innings before Jesus Bastidas led off the fifth inning with a double. The right hander retired the next three batters to stand the runner. The Yard Goats turned three double plays in the contest.
The game was scoreless after nine innings. In the 10th, Drew Romo was the automatic runner at second base and took third on a bunt by Bladimir Restituyo. Then Jack Neely threw a wild pitch allowing Romo to score the first run of the game, giving the Yard Goats a 1-0 lead.
Yard Goats starter Connor Van Scoyoc departed after seven full innings and Austin Kitchen pitched a scoreless eighth, and Juan Mejia pitched a scoreless ninth. Alec Barger entered in the 10th with Jason Rosario the automatic runner at second base. Barger walked the first two hitters, Jesus Bastidas and Mickey Gasper before getting a pair of infield pop outs. Then, Ben Rice belted a grand slam home run over the right field fence, giving Somerset a 4-1 win.
The Yard Goats continue a six-game road trip in Somerset, New Jersey on Wednesday night (7:05 PM). The game will be broadcast on AM 1410, FM 100.9 and on the iheart radio app.
