Portland, ME- The Sea Dogs scored runs in four of the first five innings, and defeated the Hartford Yard Goats 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine. David Hamilton and Wilyer Abreu homered and Niko Kavadas and Christian Koss each had RBI extra base hits, as the Sea Dogs took four of six games pushing the Yard Goats 4.5 games back in the standings. Yard Goats starter Noah Davis recorded nine strikeouts in five innings.
The Sea Dogs scored the first run of the game in the first inning as David Hamilton cranked a solo home run, giving Portland a 1-0 lead. The Yard Goats tied the game in the third inning off Sea Dogs starter Brian Van Belle. Zac Veen led off the inning with a double, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher while attempting to steal third base.
Portland added runs over the next three frames to take a lead 4-1 lead. Wilyer Abreu broke the tie with his first home run, a solo shot over the right field wall to give Portland a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Stephen Scott and Niko Kavados began the fourth inning with back-to-back double to make it 3-1. Christian Koss contributed with an RBI triple in the fifth inning, scoring Hamilton to make it 3-1.
Sea Dogs starter Brian Van Belle, and relievers Cody Scroggins and Brendon Nail held Hartford to just one run on five hits and combined for 11 strikeouts. The Yard Goats left six men on base. Yard Goats relievers Jared Biddy and Blair Calvo fired three scoreless innings.
The Yard Goats return home on Tuesday to begin their final homestand of the regular season, 12 games in 13 days against the Phillies and Yankees affiliates. RHP Mike Ruff will start for the Yard Goats on Tuesday night (7:05 PM) against the Reading Fightin Phils at Dunkin' Donuts Park.
