Staten Island Yankees News Release

STATEN ISLAND - The Staten Island Yankees held the Lowell Spinners to only one run through nine innings, but an explosive four-run tenth frame by the visitors lifted the Spinners to a 5-2 win over the Yankees at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Thursday afternoon.

Staten Island took the lead first in the contest, when Josh Breaux drove home Ricardo Ferriera with an RBI double to deep center field. Yankees starting pitcher Rodney Hutchison then went on to hold the Spinners hitless through the first four innings.

However, Lane Milligan led off the top of the fifth for the Spinners with a base hit to center field, before eventually coming home to score on an RBI ground out by Xavier LaGrant, evening up the score at 1-1.

The game stayed deadlocked all the way until the tenth inning. Lowell started the frame with Dylan Hardy on second base, as Minor League Baseball rules new for 2018 stipulate that starting in the tenth inning, each half-inning begins with a runner on second base, with that runner being the batter who made the final out of the previous frame.

Hardy advanced to third on a bunt by Jonathan Ortega, who reached on a Yankees error. Tyler Dearden then gave Lowell a lead with a RBI single to right field, which was followed by a three-run home run over the left field wall by Devlin Granberg.

Staten Island was able to push a run across in the bottom of the tenth, when Andy Diaz, who began the frame on second base after entering the game as a pinch runner, scored on a single by Junior Soto. Unfortunately, that was the only score the Staten Island could puster, as Lowell pulled out the 5-2 victory.

The two teams will face off tomorrow at 7:00pm to close out this three-game series. Getting the start for the Yankees will be Juan De Paula, with Thaddeus Ward on the mound for the Spinners.
