Indianapolis Indians News Release
MOOSIC, Pa. -- The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and right-handed pitcher Tim Redding and the Yankees' bullpen limited the Indianapolis Indians to just one run and five hits en route to a 3-1 win over the Tribe on Sunday night at PNC Field.
With the loss, Indianapolis' record falls to 35-29 on the season, while the win improves Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to 36-28. The victory also gives the Yankees a 5-1 season-series edge over the Tribe, after Scranton/Wilkes-Barre claimed three of four contests played at Victory Field in May and the first two games of this current four-game set at PNC Field.
In a game that featured only four total runs and 12 combined hits, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre offense jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning courtesy of four consecutive singles and a run-scoring double play groundout.
RF Reid Gorecki kicked off the two-run rally with a lead-off single to center field, advanced to third on a ground ball single off the bat of DH Colin Curtis and then scored on a single to left by SS Eduardo Nunez. A line drive single by 1B Juan Miranda reloaded the bases with no one out before a double play groundout by 3B Jorge Vazquez plated the second run of the frame to give the Yankees the 2-0 lead.
The Indians responded with a run of their own in the top half of the third inning to cut the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead to 2-1. With SS Argenis Diaz standing at third base after he reached first on a force out, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a deep fly ball, Triple-A rookie 2B Jim Negrych dug in at the dish and lined the fourth pitch of his at-bat to left for a double to pull the Indians to within a run of the Yankees.
Negyrch's double in the third inning marked the first Triple-A hit in the infielder's professional baseball career, while the run driven was also the first Triple-A RBI for the New York native.
The Yankees then regained the two-run advantage with a score of their own in the home half of the third inning when Vazquez flied into a force out to plate Curtis and give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre the decisive 3-1 lead.
Curtis started the Yankees' third inning rally with a one-out walk before back-to-back singles by Nunez and Miranda loaded the bases for Vazquez. Trailing in the count 1-2, Vazquez blooped a would-be base hit to right field, but an alert play by Indians' OF Brandon Jones got the out at second before Miranda was able to touch the base. Curtis, however, scored on the force out to account for the third and final Scranton/Wilkes-Barre run of the evening.
Indianapolis mounted a comeback attempt in the seventh, but a sliding catch by CF Greg Golson robbed Jones of what would have been his second hit of the contest and stranded Indians' base runners at first and second.
Yankees' RHP Tim Redding (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO) earned his third Scranton/Wilkes-Barre win after limiting the Indianapolis offense to just one run and three hits over 6.0 innings of work. In relief of the starter, three Yankee relievers - LHP Royce Ring (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 SO) and RHPs Mark Melancon (1.0 IP, 0 R, 1 BB) and Jonathan Albaladejo (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R) - held the Tribe offense scoreless over the game's final three innings. Ring and Melancon earned their seventh and fifth holds of the season, respectively, while Albaladejo worked around a two-out double in the ninth to earn his International League-leading 21st save.
Indians' RHP Charlie Morton (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) saw his record fall to 0-1 on the season after allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Tribe relievers Jeremy Powell (1.0 IP, 0 R, 1 SO) and Jean Machi (1.0 IP, 0 R) worked two perfect innings out of the Indians' bullpen.
On the offensive side of things, Clement (2-for-4, 2 2B) was the only Tribe batter to record multiple hits on the evening, while the Yankees, led by IL hits leader Nunez (3-for-4, 1 RBI) and Miranda (2-for-4), had two hitters finish the night with more than one base knock.
Indianapolis continues its four-game set with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday, June 14 at 7:05 p.m. RHP Mike Crotta is expected to get the call for the Indians, while RHP Romulo Sanchez is the probable starter for the Yankees.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
