Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitching picked up where it left off Saturday night, holding down the Indianapolis Indians' offense in the Yankees' 3-1 victory Sunday night.

After striking out 15 Indians Saturday, the Yankees' staff, led by starting pitcher Tim Redding, allowed just one run on five hits Sunday, while striking out seven more batters.

"Our pitching staff is good," said Yankees rightfielder Reid Gorecki, who went 1-4 on the day with a run scored. "What's been our problem is we haven't been putting enough runs on the board.

"These guys have been doing it all season with the pitching, so any little bit helps," Gorecki said.

The Yankees' offense managed to give the pitching staff some early runs in the game, beginning the first inning with four consecutive hits.

Gorecki started the hit parade with a single to center and moved to third on a base hit to right by designated hitter Colin Curtis. Eduardo Nunez then picked up his first of three hits on the night, driving home Gorecki with a single to left.

After a Juan Miranda single loaded the bases, third baseman Jorge Vazquez - playing in his first career Triple-A game - grounded into a double play that scored Curtis and put the Yankees up 2-0.

Indianapolis would get one run back in the third inning on a run scoring double by second baseman Jim Negrych, cutting the Yankees' lead to 2-1.

That was all the offense the Indians would get, however, as Redding allowed just three hits in his outing, and holding Indianapolis off the bases in his final 3 1/3 innings of work.

Redding picked up his first win of the season, tossing six innings of one-run ball while striking out five and walking none.

Redding departed with a 3-1 lead and turned the game over to the Yankees' bullpen.

Royce Ring was the first reliever into the game and picked up seventh hold of the season, working out of a two-out jam in the seventh inning.

After striking out lefties Jeff Clement and Pedro Alvarez - the number three and four hitters in the Indians' lineup - Ring gave up a single to catcher Luke Carlin and then hit Brandon Moss with a breaking ball to put runners on first and second.

Rightfielder Brandon Jones, the possible go ahead run, then lined a sinking line drive to centerfield that was caught by a diving Greg Golson to end the inning.

"You always want to contribute to the game somehow," Golson said. "It was just a situation where you kind of have to go on instinct."

After Mark Melancon pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, Jonathan Albaladejo came on to close the door for the Yankees, picking up his 21st save of the season as the rains came down at PNC Field.

Albaladejo has now converted 25 consecutive save opportunities for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and, in his last 10 outings, has thrown 11 1/3 innings of one-run ball, giving up six hits and striking out 19 batters while walking four.

"I've been throwing the ball really good. I feel really comfortable and, for now, I can throw the ball pretty much where I want to," Albaladejo said. "I think this is the best I've pitched throughout my career."

With 28 games to go before the All-Star Break, Albaladejo is just four saves shy of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre record for a single season, currently held by Chuck Ricci who had 25 saves in the 1995 season.

Albaladejo is also eight saves shy of the franchise record for saves in a career, trailing only Jay Baller, who had 39 saves for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, on the all-time list.

"(Closing games) is something I've always wanted to do," Albaladejo said. "It's good to get the last three outs of the game, or four, or five - whatever it is. It feels good."

The teams meet again in the third game of the series Monday at 7:05 p.m. at PNC Field. Mike Crotta (4-3, 4.25) will get the start for Indianapolis, while Romulo Sanchez (2-5, 5.05) will go for the Yankees.
