The Durham Bulls beat the Gwinnett Braves 13-6 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina Sunday night in game two of the four-game home and home series. The Bulls overcome a 4-0 deficit after a half inning of play and hammered out 19 hits in getting the win. The Bulls are now 39-25 and ten and a half in front of the Braves in the International League South, who are now 28-35. The game began after a 2 hour and one minute rain delay.
It Was Over When: When the Bulls sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth inning, scoring six runs. It turned a 5-3 Gwinnett lead into a 9-5 Durham advantage.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Jose Ortegano suffered the loss: His line: 3.1 IP, 8H, 7R/ER, 2BB, 5K. Vladimir Nunez completed the fourth: 0.2 IP, 2H, 2R/ER, 1BB. Jeff Lyman pitched the fifth, sixth and seventh: 3.0 IP, 6H, 3R/ER, 1BB, 2K and Ryne Reynoso the eighth: 1.0 IP, 3H, 1R/ER, 0BB, 0K.
At the plate: Barbaro Canizares went 2-for-4. Wes Timmons went 1-for-4 with his first homer of the season; a solo shot in the first. Luis Bolivar was 1-for-5 with his first homer of the season as well; a solo shot in the seventh.
The opposition:
On the Mound: LHP Carlos Hernandez got the win. His line: 5.0 IP, 7H, 5R/ER, 1BB, 4K. R. J. Swindle worked the sixth and seventh: 2.0 IP, 2H, 1R/ER, 0BB, 0K. Joe Bateman the eighth: 1.0 IP, 1K. Dale Thayer the ninth: 1.0 IP, 2K.
At the plate: Matt Joyce went 5-for-5 with 2 RBIs and scored three times. Desmond Jennings, Ryan Shealy and Fernando Perez each had two hits. Shealy collected three RBIs. Alvin Colina was 3-for-5 with a solo homer -his fifth home run of the season. J.J Furmaniak went 3-for-5 with 3 runs.
On Deck: The Braves and Bulls continue their four-game series Monday with game three at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. First pitch at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jair Jurrjens (0-3, 6.38 ERA at Atlanta) is scheduled to make a rehab start for the Braves. Durham will start RHP Jeremy Hellickson (8-2, 2.50 ERA).
