Syracuse Mets News Release
Fort Mill, S.C. - On Sunday afternoon at Knights Stadium the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, edged out the Charlotte Knights by a 3-2 final. Erik Arnesen earned his first win in a Chiefs uniform and Josh Wilkie recorded his first save this season.
Syracuse (37-26) got a two-run home run from Leonard Davis in the top of the second inning to start the scoring and get out to a 2-0 lead. Chase Lambin had walked to start the inning for his second walk in as many days.
In the bottom of the third, Charlotte tallied its first run when with two outs, Buck Coats singled to left, and then scored while trying to steal second base. An errant throw from Chiefs catcher Jamie Burke was the first error of the play, and a bobbled ball in center by Justin Maxwell, the second error, allowed Burke to cross home. After three, the Chiefs led 2-1.
In the fourth though, Leonard Davis would strike again. After Lambin led off the inning with a fly out to center, Davis stepped to the plate. For the second time in as many at bats, Davis swung at the first pitch and hit a home run. This was his third of the season, and gave the Chiefs a 3-1 lead.
Charlotte (28-37) did get one run back in the seventh inning against Erik Arnesen. A leadoff home run by Luis Rodriguez that cut the lead to 3-2, would be the only earned run Arnesen would surrender all day.
In earning his first win, Arnesen gave up two runs over seven innings while walking two and striking out three. Arnesen is now 1-2. Atahualpa Severino, Jason Bergmann and Josh Wilkie pitched in relief with Wilkie earning the save.
Charlotte starter Dan Hudson was denied his ninth win of the season despite striking out nine over six innings. He only gave up four hits, but two of them were home runs to Leonard Davis. Hudson drops to 8-3.
On Monday, the Chiefs and Knights will play game three of their four game series. The Chiefs will send Matt Chico (1-2, 4.13) to the mound and the Knights will throw Lucas Harrell (3-6, 4.66). First pitch is scheduled for 7:15.
