Yakima Doubles up Hawks 8-4

July 18, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Boise Hawks News Release

BOISE, Idaho - Kevin Medrano went 3-for-5 with three RBI, including the go-ahead two-run single in the top of the sixth inning, helping the Yakima Bears clinch the Northwest League's East Division first half title with an 8-4 victory over the Boise Hawks, before 2,825 fans at Memorial Stadium.

The Bears rallied from a 4-2 deficit to earn their second postseason berth in the last three seasons - hoping for their first title since the 2000 season.

Boise spotted Yakima a 2-0 lead in the first, as Danny Poma scored on a wild pitch and Shaun Cooper singled home a run. The Hawks would respond, as Gioskar Amaya homered in the bottom of the inning, then took the lead in the third on an RBI single by Trey Martin and a two-run base-hit by Jeimer Candelario.

The visitors closed the gap on a fourth inning Steve Rodriguez sacrifice fly and a fifth inning Medrano RBI single. In the sixth, singles by Rodriguez and Josh Parr set the table for Madrano, who lined a pitch just inside the third base bag to plate the pair, giving the Bears the lead. RBI singles by Mark Ginther and Josh Parr in the seventh closed the scoring.

Cooper and Parr each had 2-for-3 nights in the win for the Bears, as Alex Carreras gutted through five innings for the win. Martin, Amaya, Candelario, and Xavier Batista each had two hits in the loss for the Hawks.

Boise hits the road to Eugene tomorrow night to open a five-game series with the Emeralds. First pitch at PK Park is set for 8:05 p.m. with Ian Dickson getting the ball for Boise.

NOTES - The homer for Amaya was in his first at bat after being plunked in the head by a pitch against Vancouver on Sunday...Marco Hernandez had his seven game hit streak snapped...before the game, pitcher Bryce Shafer was promoted to Class A Peoria.
