Sioux City, IA - The Sioux City Explorers sweep the Canaries and extend their winning streak to five games with the 8-5 victory on Sunday at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
The Explorers came out of the gate on fire, scoring early and often in the first inning. X's left-fielder led-off with a double and later scored on an RBI single by Noah Perio for the first run. Explorers third baseman Tommy Mendonca doubled to score Perio for the second run. Mendonca went on to score the third run of the inning on a Jarek Cunningham RBI single. After an inning of play, Explorers 3, Canaries 0.
In the second inning, Sioux City tacked on one more to extend their lead to 4-0. X's catcher Ralph Henriquez doubled and later scored on an error by the left-fielder.
Sioux City plated two more runs in the third inning. With a runner at third, X's centerfielder Matty Johnson extended his hitting streak to five games with an RBI single, scoring the runner from third. Explorers catcher Ralph Henriquez hit a sacrifice-fly to right, which scored a tagging Mendonca from third base. In the fifth inning, Sioux Falls cut the lead to five runs by scoring their first run of the game. Canaries left-fielder Aaron Owen double with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice.
The Canaries went on to score one more in the top half of the seventh inning. Aaron Owen reached first on a base-on-balls, advanced to second with a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Canaries second baseman Frank Martinez.
Sioux City put the game out of reach in the seventh, scoring two more runs to extend their lead to 8-2. The Explorers doubled four times in the inning, knocking in two runs on five hits (four of the five hits being doubles) and one walk, while leaving three runners on base.
The Sioux Falls Canaries managed to score runs in the eighth and ninth innings but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the deficit. Explorers wrap up the home-stand with an 8-5 victory over Sioux Falls to extend their winning streak to five games.
Explorers ace Ryan Zimmerman (1-2) received his first victory of the season, allowing only one run on three hits while striking out six in 5.2 innings. X's closer Connor Overton (s-3) got his third save in as many days, securing the 8-5 win on Sunday.
The Sioux City Explorers will head to Fargo-Moorhead to take on the RedHawks in a three game series (May 30th - June 1st).
