Wichita Wingnuts News Release
FARGO, N.D. - A pair of five-run innings propelled the Wichita Wingnuts to a comfortable 14-4 sweep-avoiding victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.
After three scoreless innings on both sides, Wichita (3-7) broke the deadlock in the fourth. Richard Prigatano got the Wingnuts started with an RBI single, and Harrison Kain followed with a two-run single. Brent Dean then doubled in a run, before Leo Vargas capped the frame with a run-producing single.
The RedHawks (5-5) answered in the home half, as Luke Bailey took Jon Link (1-2) deep for a three-run shot to cut the lead to two.
That inning proved to be the lone frame in which the veteran righty was in trouble. Link allowed just two hits outside of the fourth and went seven innings, striking out a season-high seven.
With Link keeping Fargo's offense down, the Wingnuts went to work on extending their lead. Zack Cox worked a bases loaded walk in the sixth before Wichita plated five more in the eighth.
Vargas began the scoring in the frame, doubling into the left field corner. Wichita's next two runs both came without the benefit of a hit as T.J. Mittelstaedt walked and Dustin Geiger was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Prigatano added his second RBI of the afternoon with a single, before Kain added his third RBI on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
Kain capped his big day in the ninth, adding his fourth hit and fourth RBI of the day to give the Wingnuts their 14th run of the game, a season-high. Each Wichita starter scored at least once, eight of the nine had at least one of the season-high 16 hits, and all but one starter drove in a run.
K.D. Kang provided the lone run of the afternoon outside of the fourth inning for the RedHawks as he extended the game with a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the ninth.
The Wingnuts return home Monday night to open up a seven-game homestand with the first game of a four-game set with the division rival Laredo Lemurs. Anthony Capra (0-0, 3.00) will be on the hill for Wichita, while Laredo will counter with right-hander Alejandro Arteaga (1st start). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
