Xs take Game Two from Blacksnakes

SIOUX CITY - The Sioux City Explorers took game two, 9-2, from the St. Joe Blacksnakes Friday night at Lewis and Clark Park. The win pushes the Xs to 27-26 and drops the ‘Snakes to 30-23.

A night after St. Joe ripped off 19 hits, Sioux City starter Billy Keppinger held the ‘Snakes to seven hits and two runs. Keppinger threw a complete game and struck out 10, gave up no walks, and improved his record to 5-3. St. Joe starter Andrew Edwards took the loss, pitching only four innings. Edwards gave up 10 hits, six runs, walked three and struck out two; the loss drops his season record to 1-2.

The Xs got on the board in four of the first five innings. Jake Daubert doubled down the right field line and scored on a Jorge Moreno single to left. Chris Grossman walked to lead off the inning and scored on a Zack Pace single to right.

Dan Meier singled to the left field corner, driving in Moreno. In the third, Meier singled to the shortstop and scored on a Chris Grossman double. Kevin Henry walked and scored on a Mike Richardson single to left. Robert Mendoza got an infield single and drove in Grossman.

St. Joe picked up two runs in the top of the fifth when Terell Merriman doubled down the right field line and scored on a Cody Nowlin single to center. Denver Kitch singled left, and drove in Nowlin.

The Xs responded by picking up another run in the home half of the fifth. Zack Pace singled to left and scored when Jake Daubert singled to right. Sioux City would tack on two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. Daubert singled to right and scored on a Moreno triple down the left field line, and then Moreno scored on a wild pitch.

Sioux City and St. Joe will play game three of their four game series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Trevor Marcotte (1-3) will take the mound for the Xs and Evan Thomas (4-5) will start for the ‘Snakes.
