X's take game one from Sioux Falls

SIOUX CITY - The Sioux City Explorers defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries 13-4 Sunday night at Lewis and Clark Park. The win improves the X's record to 41-43 (17-19 second half), and the loss drops the Canaries to 30-52 (14-21 second half).

The X's got on the board in the second when Jorge Moreno doubled to center, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a second wild pitch. Sioux Falls would crack the scoreboard, and take the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth.

The X's rallied to take the lead, with two runs in the fourth. Sioux City added two more in the fifth and would put the game away with seven runs in the sixth. Ryan Gripp led off the sixth with his 13th home run of the season.

The Canaries added two more runs in the seventh, but the X's tacked on a run in the eighth, extending their lead to 13-4.

Nate Holguin (4-1) was the winning pitcher for Sioux City. Holguin went 6.2 innings, scattering eight hits, with four runs (only three of which were earned), walking one, and striking out four. Matt Koziara (3-3) took the loss for Sioux Falls, going five innings. Koziara allowed nine hits, eight runs, walked two and struck out three. Ty Marotz made his Sioux City Explorers debut pitching the final two and a third innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.

Chris Grossman was 3-5 at the plate, with two RBIs and two runs scored. JJ Burress and Jake Daubert each went 2-5 on the night. Each scored a run, with Burress driving in two and Daubert one. Mike Richardson and Alex Llanos added two hits apiece. Zach Pace, Jorge Moreno, Ryan Gripp, and Robert Mendoza each adding one hit.

The X's and Canaries will face-off tomorrow night at Lewis and Clark Park. Tom Lipari (6-7) will start for the X's and Aaron Garrison (5-5) will take the mound for Sioux Falls.
