Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (14-21) allowed seven runs in the sixth inning in a 13-4 defeat at the hands of the Sioux City Explorers (17-19) on Sunday night at Lewis and Clark Park.
Despite the defeat, the Canaries did have a milestone reached on Sunday. In the top of the sixth inning, Chad Hermansen singled for his 100th hit of the season. Hermansen is the 12th player in Canaries history to reach the century mark, doing so one night after Abner Arroyo recorded his 100th hit of the season. The pair of Canaries with 100 hits is just the third such pair. Chris Powell (105) and Mike Burton (102) both surpassed 100 hits in 1994, and Charles Peterson (136) and Felix Pagan (127) recorded the two highest hit totals in team history in 2001.
Sioux City got on the board in the second inning. Jorge Moreno hit a leadoff double and came around to score on a pair of wild pitches giving Sioux City a 1-0 lead.
The Canaries took the lead in the fourth. Ralph Santana got on base with an infield hit and was advanced to third base on a single by Abner Arroyo. A passed ball allowed Arroyo to advance to second and Santana to score, tying the game, 1-1. Chris Hall added a single to score Arroyo and give the Canaries a 2-1 lead.
The Explorers went back in front in the bottom half of the inning. Jorge Moreno walked and advanced to third on a single by Chris Grossman. Moreno came in to score on a passed ball, evening the score at 2-2. The passed ball also allowed Grossman to second, and he would score on a single by Daubert to give Sioux City a 3-2 lead.
Sioux City added a pair more in the fifth. Mike Richardson walked and advanced to second base on a groundout by J.J. Burress. Zach Pace doubled to score Richardson and give the Explorers a 4-2 lead. Alex Llanos followed with a single to score Pace and extend Sioux City's lead, 5-2.
The Explorers broke the game open in the sixth inning with seven runs. Ryan Gripp led off the inning with his 13th homer of the season to give Sioux City a 6-2 lead. Chris Grossman and Jake Daubert followed with singles and Kevin Henry walked to load the bases. Mike Richardson singled to score Grossman and Daubert for an 8-2 lead. J.J. Burress followed with a groundball through Abner Arroyo's legs at first base. The play was ruled a double and scored Henry and Richardson to widen Sioux City's lead, 10-2. Two walks later the bases were loaded for the second time in the inning. Robert Mendoza was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and Chris Grossman grounded out to score another to give Sioux City a ten-run lead, 12-2, through six innings.
The Canaries got two runs back in the seventh. With John Schmitz on first base and two away, Anthony Monegan hit a flyball to left field. Left fielder Jorge Moreno tripped and fell en route the ball. Monegan ended up on second base with a double and John Schmitz went to third. Ralph Santana doubled to score both Schmitz and Monegan for a 12-4 deficit.
The Explorers would add a run in the bottom of the eighth when Chris Grossman doubled to score Alex Llanos for the 13-4 final.
Nate Holguin (4-1) got the win for the Explorers. Matt Koziara (3-3) suffered the loss.
The teams will meet again on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. in Sioux City. The series moves to the Birdcage on Tuesday morning for an 11:30 a.m. start. Tuesday will be the Canaries' Desk Clock Giveaway presented by Risk Administration Services.
