X's Slip Past Wingnuts in Extras

Wichita Wingnuts News Release


SIOUX CITY, IA- The Wichita Wingnuts (23-13) lost 7-6 in 11 innings to the Sioux City Explorers (15-20) at Lewis and Clark Park on Saturday night.

Eliezer Mesa singled home the winning run with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning. Adrian Martinez was hit by a pitch leading off. Brian Bistagne pinch-ran for Martinez and advanced to second base on Anthony Kaskadden's sacrifice bunt. Bistagne scored on Mesa's single down the right field line.

Wichita scored three times in the top of the first to take an early lead. Ryan Khoury walked, Jake Kahaulelio singled, and John Rodriguez reached on an infield single to load the bases with no outs. C.J. Ziegler lined a single to center to plate Khoury and Kahaulelio. Brent Clevlen followed with an RBI single to center that made it 3-0.

Sioux City answered back in the bottom half against Wingnuts' starter Anthony Capra. A hit batter and two two-out walks set up a triple to right-center from Yusuke Inoguchi that tied the game.

Wichita re-took the lead in the top of the second. Jared McDonald doubled down the right field line, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on Khoury's groundball single to left through a drawn-in infield.

The Wingnuts made it 6-3 with two more runs in the top of the third. Clevlen walked while Abel Nieves singled to right. Two batters later, and with runners on second and third with two outs, David Amberson lined a two-run single to left.

Sioux City scracthed out a run in the bottom of the sixth on an Inoguchi sacrifice fly, and then tied it on back-to-back two-out RBI hits from Bryan Pounds and Luke Murton in the bottom of the seventh.

Daniel Bennett took the loss in relief for the Wingnuts while Chris Bodishbaugh earned the win for Sioux City.

Capra took a no-decision, allowing four earned runs on three hits in five-plus innings. Capra walked five and struck out three.

Josh Rainwater started and took a no-decision for Sioux City, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in two and two-thirds. Rainwater walked two and struck out one.

Andrew Aizenstadt threw two and one-third scoreless relief innings for Wichita. Nieves had three hits and has hit safely in 15 games in a row. Kahaulelio has hit safely in 10 straight, while Rodriguez is now on a nine-game hitting streak.
